What is love

I may or may not be falling in love with my boyfriend… how do I know if I am or not?

Callie, 15, Columbus, Ohio

And another…

Dear Pud,

How do you know when you’re in love?

Dear Callie and Joanna,

Here’s the checklist:

  1. You think he’s better than he could possibly be. In your eyes, he’s the smartest, funniest, kindest, coolest, or (and?) the best.
  2. You care more about his happiness than your own. A practical example is that you think about him when buying new clothes, wondering if he’ll like them.
  3. You can’t imagine life without him. at least right now.

And since you’re asking, you’re in love.

May I add: If you feel wonderful while with him/her, just after having been with him, thinking about etc.etc, feel thrills etc. just thinking, dreaming about him/her, and conversely, if you feel jealous seeing him talk to someone with great interest, feel pain if he actually disappoints you (doesn’t call or write), seems to be getting cool, if you fear it’s over — if the pain is severe (like a physical stab in the heart) — it’s love.

and may i also add. it’s just as important to ask why you are even asking that question.

if you don’t already know if you are in love with someone or not, and you think your answer will somehow change your actions and behavior towards this person, then perhaps something is wrong.

sometimes, whether or not you ask a question, is as important as the answer you get.

Could it also be that because they are asking – they are NOT in love?

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.Love never fails. And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

If 1st Corinthians Chapter 13 is not love, then what is love?
